Interviews:
BallerStatus.net: You are coming out with a new album tell us about it.
Bubba Sparxxx: It's called Deliverance, it gonna be out July 1st. And Uh, basically what Deliverance means, is uh, Are you familiar with the old movie "Deliverance"?
BallerStatus.net: Umm, not really.
Bubba Sparxxx: Well it really has nothing to do with that, except for like the literal, dictionary defination of deliverance. What deliverance means is just, as it applies to the old movie. A guy goes through all types of trials and tribulations. He sees himself do things he never thought he could do before. The end becoming the complete man that he always should have been, but not neccessarly what he wanted. And that's really what deliverance means as applied to being the title of my album.
BallerStatus.net: Are there gonna be any collaborations on the album?
Bubba Sparxxx: Yea, uhh, I got Bun B from UGK on the album. I got Kujo & Gip from the Goodie Mob on the album. I got Sleepy Brown from the Dungeon family on the album, the guy that has been singing with OutKast, he sings "A.D.I.D.A.S." from Killer Mike. He's also getting ready to do his solo thing on Dreamworks. Kiley Dean, new member of Beat Club, the beat club songstress. She got a song out right now called "Make Me A Song." Heather Hunter the porn star is on there. Justin Timberlake is on there. And ya know the part I'm mostly flattered about is my click, my camp, actually my label New South Entertainment. It's in the infant stages, so my entire roster of artists. I was able to get down on the album and thats a great thing from where I sit.
BallerStatus.net: Cool, who handled most of the production, was it Timbaland?
Bubba Sparxxx: Timbaland did the majority of it. Organized Noise did 4 or 5 songs, also. The Neptunes did one. Then My folks down in the ATL, the Ump Camp, some underground kats. People nationwide are gonna be hearing alot more about them in the coming months. Me and Rico Way from Organized Noise, we sat down and we kinda set the tone for what the album was gonna be like. I like to say we loaded up the base, and then I went to Miami to work with Timbaland for a month and a half and he hit the grand slam once we had loaded up the base.
BallerStatus.net: When was the release date?
Bubba Sparxxx: It's July 1st!
BallerStatus.net: Have you picked a single for the album yet?
Bubba Sparxxx: Yea, we working two songs. One's called "Jimmy Mathis" and the other one is called "Deliverance."
BallerStatus.net: Yea, I've heard both those tracks. They are pretty good, they're different & unique.
Bubba Sparxxx: Yea man. That's what I'm saying man. I really think we broke ground this time man. I think the first time me and Timbaland worked together we didn't really know each other. You know what I'm saying, we had only met like once or twice. You might go into the studio and cut one hit, you know, when you hardly know them. As far as molding an entire album, you kinda gotta know somebody, know there ins and outs and so forth. This time we both went through alot together. My first album, I was the first artist on Beat Club. It was my first time as an artist and his first time as a CEO, so we both really really went through alot together and doing alot together. I think when it came time to get to work this time, we both understood each other alot better. His vision for what Bubba Sparxx should be, my vision for what Bubba Sparxxx should be and ya know puttin all that together. I think this time... You know you see Timbaland chemistry, there's a certain (god rest her soul) Aaliyah-Timbaland chemistry. I think we really found that Bubba-Timbaland chemistry this time. We created music that's unique to Bubba Sparxxx.
BallerStatus.net: In the two singles you mentioned. I hear alot of hamonics, guitars, fiddles.. Did you come up with the idea for this?
Bubba Sparxxx: Well it was kinda both of us (him and Timbaland). We really felt obligated to do this time was... You know we decided we wanted to make music that sounded like how the "Ugly" video looked. That's really what we focused on. People were naturally intrigued by Bubba Sparxx, I feel like, people were interested and wanted to know more about what Bubba Sparxxx was about. And I'm thinking the first time I didn't really do a good job of telling my story because you know it really is an interesting story. I really have experienced alot of things in my life that are unique, especially as far as scenery goes to what most hip hop artists experience. Even though it may be the same pain and same struggle. My struggle was kinda unique in detail because I did grown up in a rural area, as compared to their stories. So we just went back and focused on telling that story this time.
BallerStatus.net: So far what I've heard, Im liking. It's coming out dope!
Bubba Sparxxx: You liked it, did you hear the sampler or did you hear like five songs?
BallerStatus.net: Oh, I got a sampler from Interscope. Its pretty tight.
Bubba Sparxxx: Yea man, Thanks.. I sure appreciate that man...
BallerStatus.net: No problem.. How is this album different from your debut album.
Bubba Sparxxx: Like I said man. I think this one is alot more revealing, alot more reflective, ya know and I feel like... You take the tracks that Timbaland produced on the first album and it's kinda like they were just like the traditional typical Timbaland sound. This time as far as the production goes, the music is alot more.. it's mind blowing like Timbaland's productions always are, but just in a completely unique and different Bubba Sparxx kinda way. It's like he provided the theme music for my movie. (laughs)
BallerStatus.net: You're working on a movie?
Bubba Sparxxx: No, no, but I'm saying that's what this album is, it's a movie. It's my life, it's that much more revealing. Like I said, I really really went out of my way to tell my story in detail this time. It might sound cliche to say, but people are gonna have alot better idea of who I really am this time.
BallerStatus.net: Since your debut, you have been kinda quiet, what have you been doing?
Bubba Sparxxx: Umm, doing alot of shows and mainly.. I'm never gonna be the kind of artist that's gonna drop an album once every year. My creative process doesn't work that way. It takes me a lil' bit longer to sort everything out in my head and figure out how I wanna apply it to music. At the end of the day, it's only been about a year and a half. My first album came out October 9th, 2001 and this second is gonna come out July 1st, 2003 so that's not even two years. If I can just maintain, one album every two years average for my whole career, that's great.
BallerStatus.net: I hear that you were gonna be on the new Limp Bizkit album. How did you and Fred Durst hook up?
Bubba Sparxxx: Well actually man, Fred Durst was the first person of note to every hear my music and like it. About three years ago, spring of 2000, we were putting together an independent album.. that's ultimately how Timbaland & Jimmy Ivine from Interscope ended of getting it anyway because of the independent album we had put together. We sold about 1500 copies. We did alright with it. The first person to hear it was Fred Durst and he calls me at my house. It was out of the blue, I get a call from Fred Durst!! I'm subterrian living at this time man.. To the point, this is how nai`ve I was, he was like, "How soon can you get out here to California?". I was driving like a beat up '79 Nissan truck at that time. (laughs) This is how nai`ve I was like "Well, I don't think I have a car that will make it out there". (laughs) He said, "Naw dummy, Im gonna fly you out!". So I had told him I'm ready whenever. And then you know, he made a few promises and for whatever reasons it just never materialized, ya know. We joke about it now, but I was really upset and let down for a while. But "Thank God" everything went down with Timbaland. Everything worked out for the best.
As far as the new song.. I was on there remix album. The remix of "Rearanged", but the new song is crazy! I think its called "Green Light, Red Light", it's me, Snoop Dogg and Fred. It's a monster, it's a real monster!
BallerStatus.net: Since you've been in the industry what have you learned and who has taught you the most?
Bubba Sparxxx: I learn from all different types of people. Im on tour right now with this kat named Kevin Black, he was the big guy in the "Ugly" video, The big black guy in front of the hay stack that took his shirt off and was shaking his fat rolls. He's a mogul, like in terms of radio promotion. I've learned alot from him as far as what the radio game is all about.
I've learned so much from Timbaland. Timbaland's my brother in every way. He gives me financial advices, advice on broads, everything. I say, people are only gonna share so much with ya, bottomline. Most things, you gotta find out for yourself. One thing I've really found out is that early on, as early as possible in this business is to find exactly who and what your circle is and stay loyal to that and only that.
BallerStatus.net: Has being white been hard for you? As far as trying to break into the industry.
Bubba Sparxxx: I think that there isn't any denying that once the "Eminem Phenomenon" occurred that kinda opened up the window for white kids rapping to comeback, but ultimately I say its got it's pros and cons. It will get you in some doors, but keep you out of other doors.
BallerStatus.net: I think if you got skill there's no denying you anyway.
Bubba Sparxxx: Right! In a perfect world that's the case.
BallerStatus.net: What artists are you really feeling today?
Bubba Sparxxx: Umm, I dunno man. I mean I'm eargerly eagerly eagerly waiting on Outkast to come back out cuz that's my Run DMC, ya know. I'm waiting on them. I got alot of respect for Eminem, Jay-Z, ya know. I think alot of people are doing their thing, but I can't say that just anybody that I'm just like in "awe" of, right now. I really respect what Ludacris is doing as far as hip-hop goes.
As far as rock goes, I'm waiting on Limp Bizkit to come back out. It's gonna be interesting to see what goes down with them. Fred has got tricks up his sleeve. I'm a big Saliva fan. I like what those guys are doing. Overall, I'm more interested than anything in seeing how people respond to my album.
BallerStatus.net: Are there any artists that you haven't worked with, that you would like to work with in the future?
Bubba Sparxxx: Umm, not really. There are alot of people that I would do stuff with, but as far as somebody that I just really need to do something with, not really. I've colaberated with the Dungeon Family and I'm a part of the Dungeon family now. Those guys are the people I grew up idolizing, so I pretty much accomplished all that.
BallerStatus.net: Your on tour now, are there gonna be any other shows or appearances that you are gonna do to promote the new album?
Bubba Sparxxx: Yea, we are going to Little Rock, AR today. We're going to Birmingham, Al - Jackson, MS - Baton Rouge, NO - then all down through Florida. The middle of May we will be back up in New York for all kinda press stuff. Then we are gonna take a couple of days off and shoot the video and then get right back on it. So Im gonna be pretty much promo continuously until the album comes out.
BallerStatus.net: What video will you be shooting?
Bubba Sparxxx: "Deliverance". Im trying to think of a creative way to tie in "Jimmy Mathis" in there somehow.
BallerStatus.net: Is there anything else we should be on the lookout for from Bubba Sparxxx?
Bubba Sparxxx: Just like I said, be on the lookout for all my artists on New South Entertainment. Ricky Rucker, a kat from the ATL that I'm fooling with. A kat named Neter Nergurski from Georgia. A kat named Dirty D, WDY kid from Anthens Georgia, my dogg Attitude from Birmingham, AL who is actually the newest member of Beat Club. Timbaland wanted to help me get my feet wet with the whole ceo thing, so we are puttin him out together. I'm slowly easyin into the executive side of things, but my primary concern is my own artistry.
BallerStatus.net: You mentioned your own label, how is that coming along?
Bubba Sparxxx: I'm taking it slow. Like I said, there's still so much for me to accomplish as an artist. I think if this upcoming album has the impact that I like to believe it will, then I will be able to focus alot more on that side of things. For now, Im just taking it slow as far as my label goes, but really really on my own career and all my artists.
BallerStatus.net: Any last comments in closing?
Bubba Sparxxx: Bubba's Coming Baby!
